Raised in a Presbyterian home, Carlos has known Christ since he was young. He was active in the youth of his church and became a leader, not only in his youth group, but nationally. At a youth camp when he was 15, a preacher gave a call for young men to consider committing their lives to Christ for full-time ministry. A friend and he went forward, but he later trained to be a math teacher.
Andrea grew up Roman Catholic and heard the Gospel for the first time from Carlos when she was 15. He invited her to church and she went. In spite of opposition from her father, she kept going to Carlos’ church and studying the Bible with him. By God’s grace she believed the Gospel and followed Christ. They were married as he finished his studies.
After marrying and studying, Carlos worked as a teacher in a town where there was no Presbyterian church. The Baptist church there was active in missions and Carlos and Andrea participated in the work. A missionary asked him to be a counsellor to those who were arriving for help at their medical clinic. Eventually he was going to the homes of these people, many of them indigenous from the mountains, and giving Bible studies. As he worked in this ministry, later full-time, he met up with his friend from youth camp, by that time a Presbyterian minister, and his friend reminded him about that meeting and their commitment. Carlos had forgotten. But his friend reminded him, God does not forget.
Carlos went on to study in seminary, and God called them through the South Texas Presbytery to serve at La Vid in 2005. His great passion is to preach the grace of salvation and he desires to see his church have that same passion for people to know God's grace in their lives.
